How far in advance should I book a gorilla trek?
We recommend booking at least 3–6 months in advance, especially for peak season (June–September and December–February). Gorilla permits are strictly limited — only 8 people per gorilla family per day — and sell out quickly. Contact us as early as possible and we will secure your permit.
How much does a gorilla trekking permit cost?
In Rwanda, a gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person. In Uganda, it costs $800 per person. Both permits allow you to spend one hour with a habituated gorilla family. The price difference makes Uganda the more budget-friendly option, though Rwanda offers shorter treks and easier logistics.
How difficult is gorilla trekking?
Trekking difficulty varies depending on where the gorillas are on the day. It can range from 30 minutes to 6+ hours of hiking through dense forest terrain. The trails can be steep, muddy, and slippery. A moderate level of fitness is recommended. We offer porter services for those who need extra assistance — highly recommended!
What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years old. This applies in both Rwanda and Uganda. Children under 15 are not permitted on gorilla treks for the protection of both the gorillas and the children.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — travel insurance is required and strongly recommended. It should cover gorilla trekking, medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and personal belongings. We can recommend reputable providers if needed.
What happens if gorilla trekking is cancelled?
Gorilla trekking is conducted year-round and very rarely cancelled. If a trek is cancelled due to extreme weather, park closure, or gorilla health concerns, we will reschedule you to the next available date or issue a full refund of the permit cost.
Rwanda or Uganda — which should I choose?
Both are extraordinary. Rwanda is easier, more compact, and has better infrastructure — ideal for a shorter, comfortable trip. Uganda has cheaper permits ($800 vs $1,500), more gorilla families, and additional wildlife like chimpanzees and savannah game. If budget allows, we recommend the Grand Combo doing both!
Is Rwanda safe for tourists?
Rwanda is consistently rated one of Africa's safest and cleanest countries. It has low crime rates, excellent infrastructure, friendly people, and a well-organised tourism sector. Kigali frequently ranks as Africa's safest city.
