Gorilla encounter

This is the question we get asked more than any other. Rwanda or Uganda? Both countries offer extraordinary gorilla encounters — but they are meaningfully different experiences. Here is our honest, no-nonsense comparison to help you decide.

The Gorillas Themselves

The gorillas are the same species — mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) — in both countries. The quality of the encounter is equally extraordinary. You get one hour with a habituated gorilla family in both destinations. There is no meaningful difference in the gorilla experience itself.

Permit Cost

  • Rwanda — $1,500 per person per trek
  • Uganda — $700 per person per trek

Uganda is significantly cheaper. For a couple, that is a $1,600 saving on permits alone. However, Rwanda's higher permit price contributes directly to conservation — and the overall trip cost difference is often smaller than the permit gap suggests due to Uganda's longer travel times and distances.

Trek Difficulty

  • Rwanda — Generally shorter, more accessible treks. Most families found within 1–4 hours. Trails better maintained.
  • Uganda (Bwindi) — Can be more strenuous and longer. Bwindi's terrain is steeper and denser. Some treks take 6+ hours. More raw and adventurous.

Infrastructure & Comfort

  • Rwanda — Excellent roads, short distances, world-class luxury lodges right at the park edge. Kigali is a modern, clean, easy city to navigate.
  • Uganda — Longer drives on rougher roads. Lodge quality variable. More rustic experience overall, which many travellers love.

Additional Wildlife

  • Rwanda — Golden monkey trekking, Big Five in Akagera, chimp trekking in Nyungwe, Lake Kivu.
  • Uganda — Chimpanzees in Kibale (world's best), tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, 1,066 bird species. Uganda wins on overall wildlife diversity.

Our Verdict

Choose Rwanda if: you want a shorter trip, prefer comfort and luxury, are visiting for the first time, or have a tighter schedule.

Choose Uganda if: you are on a budget, want a more adventurous experience, want to combine gorillas with chimpanzees and savannah wildlife, or have more time.

Choose both if: you can — the Grand East Africa Combo is the ultimate experience and our most popular package for a reason.
